TOP TIPS FROM THE GREAT ESCAPE

Last week, the British music industry decamped to the coast for annual new music festival The Great Escape in Brighton. In between free networking drinks and chips on the beach, they even found time to check out a few acts. We’ve profiled 10 of the most buzzed about for you within.

Octavian
London rapper Octavian has had endorsement from Drake for his debut single, “Party Here,” which has had more than 1.7m plays on Spotify to date. The artist is managed by Stack House, which is helmed by the heads of Sony U.K. label Black Butter, and he releases music on independent label Drilla Records.

Slowthai
Grime artist Slowthai is tipped as one to watch this year by multiple tastemakers. He has ties to Method Records, which exists as a JV with Island, and is where his latest track “Ladies” was released. Management is Lewis at Toyi Toyi.

Fredo
London grime MC Fredo has already released two albums on independent label Since 93, and this year debuted three tracks on RCA. The headline song from his latest release, Tables Turn, “Rappin’ & Trappin’ has clocked up nearly 4m plays on Spotify.

Pale Waves
Pale Waves are the latest project from The 1975 label Dirty Hit and management All On Red, and the British band shares a few similarities to their emo pop-punk predecessors (thanks in part to the production skills of lead 1975 singer Matty). Will a debut album arrive this year?

Girlhood
London producer and singer duo Girlhood have been pricking up ears with their pop soul sound after releasing a debut EP last year, and gaining support from BBC Radio 1. Music is currently being released independently via Team Talk Records.

Dream Wife
Brighton-born punk rock band Dream Wife released their debut album on Lucky Number earlier this year to much critical acclaim, and they have been similarly hailed for their energetic live show. Manager is Tim Hampson at Cannibal.

Flohio
Flohio is a South London MC who is fast becoming known for her super-slick delivery. She’s releasing music independently through Alpha and management is Giulia Ferrazzi.

Superorganism
We’ve long heard great things about the unique live skills of indie pop group Superorganism, whose members hail from the U.K., Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. The band released their debut album on Domino in March, reaching #25 on the U.K. chart, and are managed by British-based Verdigris Management.

Mahalia
Soul singer-songwriter Mahalia is a developing act signed to Warner U.K. label Atlantic who has backing from the BBC Introducing initiative. Her song “Sober” has reached more than 1m views on YouTube, and has more than 6m plays on Spotify. She’s recently released a Kojey Radical collaboration “Water” and is managed by Big Bear Management.

Ten Tonnes
Ten Tonnes is singer and songwriter Ethan Barnett, who has a famous big brother in Sony artist George Ezra. His TGE show was packed to the rafters after releasing a number of EPs over the last few years. He’s a priority for Warner Bros. U.K. this year and is managed by Red Light.
