GOTHAM TOUTS NIGHTLIFE GROWTH

The live music community of New York City gathered Friday at the second New York Music Month conference to tout the growth of the nightlife industry over the last five years. They wheeled out some data to back up their cheery outlook.

Nightlife in the five boroughs of New York produce a total economic output of $29.1b, provide 250k jobs and pay out $10.96M in wages. Nightlife has a broad definition: Bars, food service, sports & rec, arts & culture and venues. Not surprisingly, the biggest category by far is food service, which accounts for 73% of the output.

Venues, in 2016, had an output of $1.26b and saw a 10% increase in jobs and 9% in wage growth.

The arts are directly generating $3.1b, producing 18,300 jobs and $806m in wages. Jobs in the arts are up 4% and wages 3% though Brooklyn is outpacing the rest of the city with a 15% growth in jobs over the last five years. Job growth in the arts over the last 10 years is up 39% in Manhattan and a whopping 107% in Brooklyn.

The stats came from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment’s Nightlife Economic Impact Study, which will be released in full in late August. Mayor’s Office Media & Entertainment Senior Executive Director Shira Gans said the study is still a work in progress and they will be interviewing people in the business and nightlife participants for the next couple of weeks and expects to release the full data in late August.
