GAMBINO AND FRIENDS ENJOY “SUMMER” WHILE KANYE WEEPS

In Childish Gambino’s new music video for “Feels Like Summer” (Wolf + Rothstein/RCA)—an animated project co-directed by Glover, Ivan Dixon and Greg Sharp, and illustrated by Justin Richburg—Donald Glover (aka Gambino) strolls through a neighborhood, as Richburg’s renderings of other black artists at the forefront of music today enjoy summer moments. Well, at least most of them seem to be in good spirits. Kanye West, however, is shown crying while wearing a red MAGA hat and getting a hug from Michelle Obama.

Gambino has done it again, delivering a refreshingly artistic clip that’s both tasteful and stirring. The list of performers seen doing things like riding bikes, playing games, barbecuing, smoking and climbing trees includes names like Drake, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Future, Nicki Minaj, Chance the Rapper, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Migos, 21 Savage, Future, Birdman, Oprah, SZA, J Cole, Janelle Monae, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, Will Smith, Solange, Lil Pump, Trippie Redd and Azealia Banks. Viewers will also spot references to some no longer with us—XXXTentacion, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. This video—#1 on YouTube’s Trending Chart with nearly 3m views garnered in less than 24 hours—of course follows the overwhelmingly powerful one for “This Is America.”

As the thought-provoking artist prepares to head on tour with Rae Sremmurd next week, one can’t help but wonder when his next album will surface.
