MEMO FROM JON

Here’s the internal memo from Jon Platt discussing his impending exit from Warner/Chappell, which we excerpted in our story about his move to Sony/ATV.

Hi everyone,

It pains me to tell you that I will be leaving Warner/Chappell before the end of this calendar year.

I’ve only ever worked at two music companies in my 20+ year career - EMI Music Publishing for over seventeen years, and then Warner/Chappell. Warner/Chappell has been my home for six years, and I’ve really enjoyed working with you. What we’ve accomplished here is truly extraordinary. Our songwriters have become the standard for creative excellence. Our team has built Warner/Chappell into the strongest company it’s ever been. We’ve done it together, and we’ve done it our own way. I have no doubt that you can reach even higher.

That made this decision the hardest of my professional life. But in the end, I’ve been offered an opportunity, that if I didn’t take it, I would have constantly questioned myself. I can’t say what the role is yet, but I hope that when you hear about it, you’ll understand why I have accepted it.

However sad I am to be going, I’m happy to be handing over the reins to a world-class leadership team. During this transition, I will be working very closely with our COO, Carianne Marshall, who I brought to Warner/Chappell because of her vision and talent. I know that she and our fantastic leadership team around the world will take care of you and our songwriters while my successor is found.

WMG is an amazing company. I’ve grown so much in my time here, not only as a music executive, but as a leader. I’ll be forever grateful to Steve Cooper and Len Blavatnik for their belief in me, and for their support. Most importantly, I want to thank you – all of you around the world – I am humbled by the support and trust you’ve so generously given me. Collaborating daily with so many kindred spirits has been an incredible experience.

Throughout my career, I’ve always put songwriters first. It’s a philosophy that has guided me well. I know you feel the same way. So I know that nothing is going to stop you from continuing the great work you are doing for songwriters.
