FIKE YEAH

When word first began to circulate about Columbia's deal with Florida artist Dominic Fike—reported in August—it was virtually impossible to find any music online. But commentary about his four-track demos suggested those tracks had made an impact during their brief window of availability. Fike evidently created these recordings during a period of house arrest in Naples, FL, just prior to being incarcerated.

Now Columbia has brought them out as the EP Don't Forget About Me, Demos, and the collection of songs showcases the young artist's eclectic influences, possibly including Weezer, Coldplay, The Police, Sublime and Bon Iver, among others, combined with lo-fi hip-hop. But the tunes sound anything but derivative; there's clearly an original sensibility on display, not to mention a compelling vocalist with a silky falsetto.
