3/11/16

WHAT IT IS: A self-described “redneck from East Tennessee,” Thompson was raised in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, surrounded by the familiar sights of small-town life—DF bars, mobile homes, lawns dotted with pink flamingos—that would eventually fill the songs on her debut album. The young cousin of Loretta Lynn, she moved to Nashville as a teenager, becoming a regular at downtown honky-tonks for six years straight, performing classic country songs. These days, she’s singing her own songs and telling her own stories. A sly, quirky songwriter, she fills her music with anecdotes about her family in songs like “Pregnant at the Prom” and “Vows.” Thompson shines a light on her own misadventures too, with debut single “Someone to Take Your Place,” a tongue-in-cheek anthem about embracing the single life. Together, these autobiographical songs showcase a young storyteller who’s ready to carry on her family’s country legacy, with one foot rooted in the twang of trad country and the other pointing in a bold new direction. Thompson is currently putting the final touches on her full-length album, expected later this year.
