BY KENZ MEADOWS

Last week, L.A.’s Arts District gem, The Resident, welcomed local band NONA to its stage. NONA is the brainchild of Michael Goldman, who both writes the lyrics and composes the music for all of the group’s songs.

The music has a vintage tone. It manages to be a bit wistful and often make me feel like I’m in a teen-movie montage (a routine aspiration). With moments of yearning, self-pity, confrontation and denial, there’s something for everyone (besides the blindly peppy, but who needs those folk anyway?). I bet you Goldman loves Pavement.

The band, who was opening for Madeline Kenney when I caught them, isn't signed. Their most popular song, “Otherways,” has more than 600k streams, and snagged solid sync placement on podcast Millennials Don’t Suck. It's also landed featured spots on Spotify’s Fresh Finds, New Indie Mix, and Good Indie playlists. Their close work with more widely known acts like Goldroom (who we’ve also got a soft-spot for) is worth noting as well.

Forthcoming EP Otherways—NONA's five-track dip into Goldman’s proverbial pool of youthful philosophizing—will be released 10/20 via WAX ltd.. Mark your calendars now, and whet your appetite with a stream of single "Fathers Day" below.
