——Billie Joe Armstrong on teaming with Christina Aguilera

MONDAY MORNING RECAP: RODRIGUEZ, BILLY JOE, PITCH PERFECT, MILA KUNIS

The most surprising appearance on the iTunes charts entering the new week is on the album side, where Cold Fact, a 1970 artifact by Rodriguez, is #4, while Searching for Sugar Man, the four-month-old soundtrack to the feature-length documentary about the same artist, is #9. That’s an example of the sort of overnight bump an artist can get from being featured on 60 Minutes. Another soundtrack album—this one to the new music-centric film Pitch Perfect (see next item) is the other Top 10 newcomer, vaulting to #2, below only the deluxe of the mighty Babel. Speaking of mighty, Adele’s movie-associated new single hasn’t budged from the top spot on the singles chart, topping the power trio of PSY, One Direction and Taylor Swift. Ke$ha and Rihanna have the other recent releases on the leaderboard, while rookie Alex Clare continues to hang with the heavy hitters.

In other news involving the intersection of music and TV, Billie Joe Armstrong may be in rehab, but that won’t keep the Green Day frontman from becoming a mentor for Team Xtina on The Voice, starting tonight. "I think we're a good pairing, and it's been great," he says of the improbable pairing with Aguilera. And Muse managed to be both grandiose and funky on SNL.

Moving to the weekend box office, with a $50 million opening weekend, the sequel Taken 2 enjoyed the third best October debuts ever, putting it in the distinguished company of Paranormal Activity 3 ($52.6m) and Jackass 3-D ($50.4m). The holdover Hotel Transylvania was #2 with $26.3m, dropping 38%. Pitch Perfect clicked in its nationwide expansion to 2,770 locations, earning $14.7m. The audience was 81% female, with 55% under 25, attracted by strong word-of-mouth (it got an A on CinemaScore). Looper time traveled to #4 in its second week with $12.2 million (-41%). Disney’s debuting Frankenweenie rounded out the top five with a disappointing $11.5m, causing observers to question the wisdom of releasing the movie just a week after Hotel Transylvania. More on Box Office Mojo.

October is traditionally the biggest sports month of the year, and this weekend we got the MLB playoffs; a dramatic college football Saturday as LSU, Florida State and Georgia tumbled out of the Top 10; Tom Brady outdueled Peyton Manning, while Drew Brees broke Johnny Unitas’ record for consecutive games with a scoring pass; and Steve Nash made his debut in a Lakers uniform.

Finally, Mila Kunis has been named Esquire’s 2012's “Sexiest Woman Alive.”
