While NSYNC dominates in the brick-and-mortar world, the digital crown currently rests upon the head of Ernesto Cortazar.
MP3.com announced that Cortazar, the pianist who has dominated the site’s Easy Listening and Classical charts for the last six months, surpassed the two million-download mark after signing on with MP3.com on Aug. 19, 1999.
"Today is a wonderful day for me," said the 60-year-old Cortazar, who has created background music for over 500 motion pictures. And then, echoing the statements of most people who have read this story, Cortazar said, "I cannot believe that my music has been downloaded more than two million times."
In addition to the multimillion downloads, Cortazar sold 4,600 Digital Automatic Music CDs and earned over $37,000 through MP3.com’s Payback for Playback promotion. He also received nearly 700,000 page views of his artist Web page.
"Ernesto is a perfect example of an MP3.com artist who capitalized on our Music Service Provider services," said MP3.com Chairman and CEO Michael Robertson. "And thanks to a recent trade with the Florida Marlins, I think he’s just the light-hitting middle infielder the Dodgers have needed."
