MUSIC CHOICE PUTS ITS ASCAP ON

Digital Music Service Has PROs in Different Area Codes, Thanks to New Licensing Pact
Music Choice has cut a long-term licensing fee with Performing Rights Org ASCAP for its digital music services, which include cable, satellite and online content.

The Pennsylvania-based company’s offerings reach some 23 million homes nationwide, with 45 channels in various genres and a concert series broadcast via affiliated cable stations.

The deal excuses Music Choice from the ongoing proceedings to negotiate ASCAP fees for cable, but there were lots of tearful goodbyes and promises to send email.

"This agreement recognizes that Music Choice values the contribution made by ASCAP members, and it assures that these members will be adequately compensated for the performance of their copyrighted musical works," proclaimed ASCAP CEO John A. LoFrumento. "Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to put on my legwarmers and work out to the ’80s channel."

"Music Choice is pleased to have reached a mutually satisfying agreement that affirms the notion of fairness and competition within the music service industry while respecting the rights of copyright holders," bellowed MC President/CEO Dave Del Beccaro. "I am also pleased that this quote can be cut and pasted into at least seven other agreements we plan to make this year."
