M83, Gotye and Lana Del Rey make their way into the spotlight, as the first touts of 2012.
Mute/EMI Label Services act M83 is French musician Anthony Gonzalez, who has been making his hybrid mix of electronic and guitar rock, featuring reverb effects and lyrics whispered softly over loud instrumentals, for a decade, influenced by the likes of techno pioneer Jean Michel Jarre. The new double-album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which came out last August, was voted #1 in Pitchfork’s reader’s poll, as was the single, “Midnight City,” now starting to see nice gains at PoMo radio, including KROQ and Sirius XM Alt Nation. The N.Y.-based diva, who is already breaking big on the Continent, is haunting like Julee Cruise crooning the theme to a David Lynch movie. The first single, “Video Games,” is already a viral YouTube smash with 16 million online views, while the clip for the album title track has added another 8 million.
