MEMPHIS TOPS FELA!, AMERICAN IDIOT, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET FOR BEST MUSICAL TONY

Memphis, an interracial love story set in the South in the ‘50s, was the big winner at last night’s Tony Awards, topping four categories, including Best Musical, Book, Score and Orchestrations.

The show beat out critical fave Fela!, Green Day’s American Idiot and Million Dollar Quartet, the jukebox musical about the Sun Records supergroup Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, for the top prize.

Newcomer Levi Kreis won the Featured Actor award for his portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis in the musical.

Eleven-time nominee Fela! took home Tonys for choreography, costumes and sound design, while American Idiot won for lighting and set design.

Hollywood was also represented, with Scarlett Johansson getting a Featured Actress award for her Broadway debut in A View From the Bridge, while Catherine Zeta-Jones added a Tony to her Oscar for Best Actress in a Musical in A Little Night Music.

Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and co-star Viola Davis scored Best Actor and Actress for the drama Fences, which won for Best Revival.

Hosted by Sean Hayes, the show boasted presenters Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Michael Douglas as well as musical performances by Glee stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele.

The night’s big winner was Red, which took home six Tonys, including Best Play, starring Alfred Molina as painter Mark Rothko.

La Cage Aux Folles won for Best Musical Revival, with British actor Douglas Hodge, who plays the drag headliner, earning Best Performance in a Musical.

Katie Finneran earned a Featured Actress prize for her portrayal of the boozy barfly in Promises, Promises.
