New Spoon track

GIMME FACTS: With a bit of effort, we’ve managed to sort out some of the details surrounding the initial rollout for Spoon’s eighth album, They Want My Soul, coming from Loma Vista on 8/5. The “R.I.P.” tease refers to the album track “Rent I Pay,” which is now available as an instant-grat with the pre-order. The band debuted the crunchy new tune yesterday in a webcast for NPR, which you can check out above. The album’s lone non-original is Ann-Margret's "I Just Don't Understand." No joke—The Beatles once covered it too. Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, My Morning Jacket, The Raconteurs) produced the initial sessions, while Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT) helmed the rest of the project. And keyboardist/guitarist Alex Fischel, a member of Britt Daniel’s other band (don’t say side project), Divine Fits, is now the fifth member of Spoon. That should bring us up to date on the latest from Lenny Beer’s favorite utensil. (6/10a)
