WAFF benefit

BIG UPS FOR LITTLE STEVEN: We Are Family Foundation, the nonprofit org founded by Nile Rodgers, will hold its 2014 Celebration Gala on 1/21 at Manhattan Center's Hammerstein Ballroom. The benefit will include a concert and musical tribute to Nelson Mandela featuring Rodgers & Chic and Steven Van Zandt, who’ll receive this year's WAFF Humanitarian Award—and this is one cat who truly fits the definition of “humanitarian.” As you old-timers may recall, back in 1985, Van Zandt founded Artists United Against Apartheid and released the anthem "Sun City" while Mandela was still imprisoned, hastening his release and the end of apartheid. The event will take as its theme and inspiration the famous Mandela quote, "It is music and dancing that make me at peace with the world." Purchase tickets or make a contribution at wearefamilyfoundation.org. (1/8a)
