Hunger Games DVD Blows Out at Retail

HUNGER QUENCHED: The Hunger Games DVD and Blu-ray sold 3.8 million units in its first weekend, according to studio Lionsgate, following a North American box office take of $407 million and more than $700 million worldwide. The film proved to be the largest digital and on demand launch in the company’s history, generating the biggest first-day sales of any title on Zune Video on Xbox, achieving more first-day transactions on Comcast than any title in the past four years and scoring record revenue on iTunes. Lionsgate said more than 1/3 of its first weekend units sold in the more pricey Blu-ray format. Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I, which came out in February, is the year’s top seller with 5.2 million DVD and Blu-ray units to date. (8/21p)
