Clever marketing for Chabon novel

HIGH FIDELITY: To help sell Michael Chabon's new novel Telegraph Avenue (Sept. 11), HarperCollins marketing team will convert Oakland bookstore Diesel into a pop-up store called Brokeland Records, the used record store that provides the setting for the novel, the Wall Street Journal reports. Harper is creating exterior Brokeland Records signs to temporarily replace the Diesel signs, as well as Brokeland Records bags, buttons and stamps to give out to everyone who buys the book. On Sept. 12, the pop-up store will host a launch party that will also serve as a fundraiser for 826, a nonprofit organization that provides writing classes and tutoring for students. The author, a knowledgeable music fan. will donate an 8-track player and a Telegraph Avenue mixtape that will be raffled off as prizes. The enhanced e-book will include an interactive map of Oakland, eight videos featuring Chabon, a playlist he created, an animated cover, audiobook clips performed by Clarke Peters (The Wire) and a Telegraph Avenue theme song composed by Peter Lerman. The novel has been optioned by producer Scott Rudin. (8/15a)
