WATERLOO SUNSET: London celebrated the 16 days of the Olympics with previously unreleased footage of John Lennon singing "Imagine," topping off a night of performances from The Kinks’ Ray Davies, Madness, the Pet Shop Boys, One Direction, George Michael, The Kaiser Chiefs, Ed Sheeran, Fatboy Slim, Annie Lennox, Queen with Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Taio Cruz, Liam Gallagher and Beady Eye, Muse and the reunited Spice Girls. Perched atop a bus, Russell Brand sang "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which morphed into "I Am the Walrus”; Monty Python's Eric Idle performed "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"; and Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Georgia Jagger, Karen Elson, Lily Donaldson and several other supermodels sashayed along with David Bowie's "Fashion.” The closing ceremony, titled "A Symphony of British Music" and directed by choreographer Kim Gavin, also featured performance footage of The Beatles, The Who and Freddie Mercury. Not everyone was impressed. Noted English rockcrit Barney Hoskyns called the decidedly mainstream extravaganza "appalling." (8/13a)
