Grammy contraction

IS EVERYBODY HAPPY? UH, NO: The Recording Academy’s elimination of 31 Grammy categories from 109 to 78 has some people up in arms—specifically those artists who feel they were squeezed out by the contraction, Randy Lewis and Gerrick Kennedy noted in the L.A. Times. Nominations in the R&B categories were cut from eight to four, while in country, separate categories for male and female vocal performance, as well as collaborations were eliminated. Manager Jim Guerinot pointed out that his client Trent Reznor won the Oscar for his score for The Social Network but didn't make the Grammy nom list. “Today it was opening my paper and seeing that the guy who won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for best score didn't even get nominated.… I don't know what they've done to improve the process” with this year's changes, Guerinot said. “The Grammys have led with their chin for 30 years, and they're not going to stop now. It's what they do.” (12/2a)
