Troubadours doc on KOCE tonight

SET YOUR TIVOS: Those of you with a taste for (or memories of) L.A. history won’t want to miss American Masters: Troubadors: Carole King/James Taylor & The Rise of the Singer-Songwriter, airing tonight at 8 on KOCE. Directed by Morgan Neville (Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, the Emmy-winning Hank Williams: Honky Tonk Blues), the doc focuses on the venerable West Hollywood club in recounting the story of the’70s singer/songwriter movement in general, and James Taylor and Carole King in particular. Along with the tons of archival footage, the film is loaded with on-camera recollections from the participants, including David Crosby, Roger McGuinn, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Peter Asher, Lou Adler, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Robert Hilburn, Barney Hoskyns, Robert Christgau, Henry Diltz, Cheech & Chong and Steve Martin. “I always think, when Monet started painting Impressionism, why were there suddenly six other people doing it too?” says Martin about the scene. “It’s because it was the moment for it, and that was the moment for that. There was almost no barrier between the artist and the art.” (3/2a)
