DIGITALIA: Plenty of skepticism in the music industry about the possibilities of three high-profile digital ventures, including European site Spofity, Google Music and Apple’s planned new subscription service launching before the end of the year. The industry is underwhelmed by Spotify’s advertising-supported free model, and will force the company to fork over a huge advance before allowing it to come to the U.S. Meanwhile, Google has offended many biz insiders by their insistence on getting paid for removing illicit file-sharing sites from their music searches. Insiders give the best chance to Apple’s new cloud-based service because, as one wag put it, “People just buy whatever it is Steve Jobs is selling.” (10/14p)
