Apple-NMPA Song Sample Dispute

30 SECONDS TO COMPROMISE? One of the moves Apple didn’t announce at this morning's conference in S.F. was its planned desire to lengthen iTunes song samples from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. And while reports are the four major labels agreed to the move, word comes from the NMPA (National Music Publishers’ Association) that they were never approached for their approval. According to CNET, which originally reported the plan, Apple must now hammer out a deal with the publishers, fight it out over the issue in court, or walk away. Said NMPA President/CEO David Israelite: “We have not raised any substantive objection to the concept and look forward to a productive discussion with Apple if they wish to pursue this.” Let the games begin.
