Gerard Cosloy quotes in Arcade Fire story

SOMETHING PURE CAN LAST: In his excellent piece on Arcade Fire’s uncompromised success, New Yorker pop music critic Sasha Frere Jones extracted a couple of zingers from Matador’s reliably quotable Gerard Cosloy. When Jones asked him about the difference between major and indie labels, Cosloy succinctly replied, “The latter are still in the record business.” He later elaborated on the thought: “Record labels aren’t nearly as fucking smart as they think they are, otherwise they’d have found a way to have done away with these pesky artists. Conversely, who is actually thriving without the benefit of a trad record label?” “Record labels aren’t nearly as fucking smart as they think they are, otherwise they’d have found a way to have done away with these pesky artists. Conversely, who is actually thriving without the benefit of a trad record label?” (8/13a)
