Robertson in the Clouds

HE’S BAACK: Remember MP3.com’s Michael Robertson and his crazy idea to store music in Internet lockers? Well, that’s exactly what the much-touted cloud computing is all about. Robertson’s latest venture, MP3tunes, allows subscribers to stream music to their mobile devices from files stored on server computers compatible with virtually any device that has an Internet connection. The San Diego-based company introduced its "Buy Anywhere, Listen Everywhere" service, in the process taking a dig at Apple's iTunes, which requires buyers to convert their digital songs to a different file format to make them playable on non-Apple devices. "Apple wants to lock you into their store and devices," said Robertson, who founded the original MP3.com site in 1997. "But what's best for consumers is to be able to shop at any store and use it with any device." (7/13a)
