The Vatican Rocks

ROCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR: The Vatican’s official newspaper, L’ Osservatore Romano, has published what it called “a semiserious guide” to the top 10 rock and pop albums of all time, the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy column noted. The list, topped by the BeatlesRevolver, included both no-brainers like Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of The Moon, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, U2’s Achtung Baby, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Paul Simon’s Graceland, but also a pair of discerning left-field choices in Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly and David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name. Also on the list were Oasis(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? an Carlos Santana’s mega-selling Supernatural. Shut out by the Holy See was Bob Dylan, who was left off the list despite his “great poetic vein.” Bob’s sin was that we he inspired generations of singer/songwriters who have “harshly tested the ears and patience of listeners.” (2/16a)
