Kacey Musgraves Performs Beloved Pageant Material Cut on Kimmel

Mercury Nashville's Kacey Musgraves recently performed "Dime Store Cowgirl"—a fan favorite from her sophomore album, Pageant Material—on the Kimmel outdoor stage. Watch below.

The song is many things, including cheeky and nostalgic, as she looks back on her recent rise into the limelight. But it's also ironic. As Musgraves shared at last week's Wiltern performance, the lines "I'm just a dime store cowgirl. That's all I'm ever gonna be" we're inspired by a specific moment from her youth.

The singer/songwriter recalled being in a super-Western group, in which kids were encouraged to wear cowboy hats and sing Roy Rogers tunes. She preferred to wear her hat tilted far back, standing out from the rest and aiming for a retro, pin-up cowgirl style. The traditional Texan mother of a bandmate of course told her to stop, scolding her for looking like a "dime store cowgirl."

Looks like that's not all she's ever gonna be.
