REPORT: STONES RETURN TO CHICAGO BLUES FOR NEXT LP
As Mick Jagger prepares for Friday’s opening night of the Desert Trip festival in Indio, he has taken to Twitter to ask fans what they want in the set list. Anyone picking a cover from their earliest albums—“Honest I Do,” “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” “Little Red Rooster”—may well be tapping into the inspiration for the next Rolling Stones album.
Their next LP, which Interscope will release, is expected to be a collection of vintage Chicago blues songs; a December release is expected, based on a translation of an interview Don Was did with the French newspaper Le Figaro.
Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron recorded the songs live in the studio over the course of three days with Eric Clapton as a guest on two tracks. Ultimate Classic Rock reported the story first, using Internet translation services to figure out the quotes of Blue Note President Was. The Stones apparently intend to release sessions with no retouching or overdubs.
In late September, Jagger had tweeted a photograph of a vest holding a collection of blues harmonicas with the hashtag #playingtheblues. They started jamming on Little Walter and Howlin Wolf songs and the sessions remained in the 2120 S. Michigan Ave. groove rather than moving on to originals.
