With $155m, Disney and Lucasfilm's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story scored the third largest opening of 2016, the 12th largest opening ever and the second December opener to bow with more than $100m, according to Box Office Mojo.

3. Office Christmas Party (Paramount) $8.5m 3,210/$2,632 avg. (week 2)

5. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Warner Bros.) $5m 3,036/$1,657 avg. (week 5)

Meanwhile, Lionsgate's critically adored La La Land, which has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score, jumped #15-7 this week, as it expanded to 200 theaters and earned a $20k per theater average—a 356% increase.
