BBC RADIO 1 HOSTS FUTURE STARS
We were especially wowed by one standout star at BBC Radio 1’s Future Festival in London, where the station hosted sets from a diverse range of acts expected to have success over the coming year at its Maida Vale studios.
From the Universal camp, neon pop/R&B act Alma (Virgin EMI), hailing from Finland, opened with a few high-energy tunes. Fiction band The Amazons turned the volume up with heavy riffs, and labelmates The Big Moon delivered a melodic set.
Representing Sony at Tuesday's event, Columbia chief Ferdy Unger-Hamilton was there to support story-telling troubadour Declan McKenna, while Relentless rapper Nadia Rose got the crowd to wine to her rhymes.
From the Warner family, THEY brought soulful R&B all the way from L.A., followed by Dave, who hails a little closer to home from South London, and impressed with his philosophic rap.
Our favourite was R&B singer/songwriter Jorja Smith, who has shunned multiple label offers to go it alone (at least for now). She’s published by Sony/ATV. Check out a rather breathtaking performance of “Where Did I Go” here:
