EMMY'S BIG WINNERS: LIES, HULU & VEEP

At an Emmy Awards show long on Trump jokes, rebukes and innuendo, HBO’s Big Little Lies and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale dominated the trophy collecting affair. The Reese Witherspoon-Nicole Kidman-Laura Dern whodonit won for best limited series and the Margaret Atwood adaptation won for best drama series. And, of course, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Veep were big winners, too.

HBO’s Veep won best comedy series for the third straight year, putting it in company with such contemporaries as 30 Rock and Modern Family. Louis-Dreyfus was named best comedy actress for the sixth time.

Big Little Lies’ four wins included a supporting actress nod to Dern, supporting actor for Alexander Skarsgård and the director award to Jean-Marc Vallee.

In the drama series category, Handmaid’s Tale five winners included Elizabeth Moss as best actress, Ann Dowd, supporting actress, and Bruce Miller for writing. It is the first show on a streaming service to win the best drama award.

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, won two awards for his work on FX’s Atlanta: comedy directing and best actor in a comedy series. John Oliver did the same—best variety talk series and writing for a variety-talk series.

Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin won awards for their work on Saturday Night Live, which was named best variety sketch program. Director Don Roy King was also honored.

Stephen Colbert hosted the show, which opened with a song featuring TV stars and Chance the Rapper. (You can see it below). The full list of winners is here.
