ABC’s reboot of American Idol attracted 10.4 million viewers on Sunday night, about 2.94m of which were in the 18-49 demo, the most significant number in the ratings for the show. The grandaddy of reality competition series earned a 2.3 rating overall.
It’s a solid start for the show with Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan in their rookie outing as judges of wannabe singers. In its 15th—and final—season at Fox, the show’s premiere had close to 11m viewers per episode of which 3.8m were in the demo. ABC’s debut is down about 23% when it comes to audience the advertisers covet.
It’s up to ABC now to grow that audience, something Fox was unable to do in 2016. ABC is doing things a little differently: They’ve started later in the year, will have a shorter season and is airing on Sunday nights, a way from powerhouse midweek scripted shows on other networks.
The second Idol episode airs tonight from 8 to 10.
