A new trailer from Spike Lee’s timely and critically acclaimed film BLACKkKLANSMAN just uploaded by Focus Features does double duty as a music video, because the footage is accompanied by a previously unreleased Prince recording: “Mary Don’t You Weep.” The stripped-back vocal-and-piano arrangement, with just a hint of percussion, is as churchy as the Purple One gets.
While details of the track’s origin aren’t specified in the accompanying text, it’s part of a massive Prince treasure trove acquired by Sony Music from the late artist’s estate, which is being overseen by the multitasking Troy Carter.
Take a look and listen.
