A TEMPLE FOR COPYRIGHTS

Karyn A. Temple has been named Register of Copyrights and the Director of the U.S. Copyright Office after spending five months as Acting Register.

During that time, the former Associate Register of Copyrights led the implementation of an office-wide modernization plan. Temple, a former RIAA lawyer, has been with the office since 2013.

Her appointment was met with praise from The Digital Media Association.

“She is unquestionably well-qualified for this position and throughout her tenure at the Office, including the past few years as Acting Register, she has shown a strong commitment to thoughtful copyright policymaking,” said DiMA CEO Garrett Levin. “Her appointment comes at a critical moment, as the Office continues the vital work of implementing the Music Modernization Act. We look forward to working with Register Temple and the entire Copyright Office staff to fulfill the promise of that legislation to bring increased efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness to the music licensing ecosystem.”

Prior to joining the Copyright Office, Temple was senior counsel to the deputy attorney general of the United States, assisting with the formulation of U.S. Department of Justice policy on sensitive legal issues and helping to manage the department’s Task Force on Intellectual Property.
