CHANGES AT CAMP DRAKE

Remember when we told you that, despite rumors, there was no way Drake would leave Sir Lucian’s Universal in the post-Scorpion era? Well, going forward Drizzy’s label will be listed as none other than Frozen Moments/Republic—as opposed to YMCMB/Republic.

Tongues started wagging with added intensity when listeners heard Drake rap, “Soon as this album drop I’m out of the deal,” on Scorpion song “Is There More.” That was summer 2018, and the words “free agent” began circulating like wildfire. While we assumed his exit from longtime subsidiary Cash Money was indeed imminent, we also predicted the creation of his own label that would keep him within Monte Lipman’s Republic.

Speculation surrounding Drake’s desire to get out of his deal has been bubbling for years. Many considered the title of mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which dropped by surprise in 2015, to be a direct dig. Fans also believed certain lyrics validated claims that the star was owed substantial royalties—i.e. “Brand new Beretta, can’t wait to let it go/ Walk up in my label like ‘Where the check, though?’” (“Star67”). It’s worth noting that If You’re Reading This was released hot on the heels of Lil Wayne’s $51m lawsuit against Cash Money Records and label boss Birdman.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it. And don’t forget to give us a drag.
