THE BMC CELEBRATES BLACK CREATORS

The Recording Academy’s newly launched Black Music Collective hosted its inaugural Grammy Week event to celebrate the countless contributions of Black creators and professionals to the music industry.

Held on 3/10, the virtual program was hosted by Jeriel Johnson and was packed with performances from Grammy-winning artists like Yolanda Adams and PJ Morton, who performed a rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”; H.E.R. and first-time-Grammy-nominated rapper and producer duo Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist.

The event also featured intimate reflections from industry moguls like Recording Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr., UMG EVP, Business & Legal Affairs for North America Jeff Harleston, former Chairman/CEO of BET Networks Debra Lee, Quincy Jones, Jimmy Jam and more.

"As the first of its kind, we created this event with every intention to amplify Black voices and each of our experiences within the industry," said Mason. "The BMC will continue to foster a space for members and industry professionals to educate and elevate Black creators during Grammy Week and beyond."

Additionally, John Legend, Janelle Monáe and Issa Rae, among others, discussed the Black experience in the context of social justice via fireside chats.
