A GIANT STEP FOR A LOVE SUPREME

Ravi and Michelle Coltrane, the children of John and Alice Coltrane, receive a platinum plaque from the head of Verve and Impulse! Records, Jamie Krents, left, and the label’s VP of Jazz Development, Ken Druker, right, at the John & Alice Coltrane Home on Long Island. Also on hand is Coltrane estate attorney Michael Frisch.

John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme has been certified platinum by the RIAA for sales of 1m albums in the U.S.—56 years after its release on Impulse! Records.

The timing of the certification coincides with the recent release of A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle and today’s release of the digital-only set A Love Supreme: The Platinum Collection via Impulse!/UMe.

UMe President & CEO Bruce Resnikoff said, “John Coltrane is one of the most important artists of the 20th century and A Love Supreme is his masterwork. We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and that the album continues to find new listeners more than five decades after its release.”

A Love Supreme will also be rereleased by Supersense as one of the first titles in its new Mastercut Edition series. Limited to 999 units globally, the high-end pressing features LPs cut from the original analog source without any digital interference, compression or compromise.

“The last few years have seen a flurry of activity from the partnership of Impulse! Records, UMe and the Coltrane estate,” Verve/Impulse EVP Jamie Krents said. “It’s truly incredible to see the catalog and legacy of Mr. Coltrane not only thriving and but literally growing with the addition of these recordings.”
