The National Museum of African American Music's yearlong photography exhibit “This Is Hip Hop” is celebrating the genre’s 50th birthday.
The show opened 1/19 with a fireside chat between Chicago hip-hop photographer Raymond Boyd and DJ Kenny Smoov, a radio personality in Nashville (92Q), the museum's home base. Boyd's work joins pieces by Bay Area photographer Traci Bartlow, illustrator (and former contributor to The Source) Andre Leroy Davis and Atlanta's Shannon McCullum.
Elevating breakdancing, graffiti art, MC'ing, DJ'ing and other hallmarks of hip-hop culture—the museum aims to highlight the form's profound global impact.
Seen in a 1989 photo by Boyd are (l-r) Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube and Public Enemy's Chuck D.
