HIP-HOP AT 50: BMAC HONORS ERNIE PANICCIOLI

The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) is hosting a series of private dinner parties across the country in honor of the often unsung heroes of Black culture. The series kicked off in New York City last week with a tribute to hip-hop photographer Ernie Paniccioli.

Held at The Red Rooster in Harlem, the soirée featured guest speaker Dr. Marcus Anthony Hunter, professor of sociology and African American studies at UCLA and coiner of #BlackLivesMatter. Other notable attendees included RCA’s Carolyn Williams, SiriusXM’s Nicole Hughley, Audiomack VP Jason Johnson, Pop Smoke’s mother, Audrey Jackson, and fashion designer April Walker.

BMAC took the occasion to unveil the BMAC x ErniePaniccioli Photojournalism Grant for young BIPOC photographer/ photojournalists looking to take their careers to the next level. The recipient will receive $2,500, the opportunity to capture some of the biggest music festivals, concerts and events this summer and mentorship by an industry professional. Those interested can tag @bma_coalition and @erniepaniccioli on social media before 4/30, when the recipient will be selected.

"What better way to appreciate the value of 40 years of my work than to ensure a grant for future generations?” said Paniccioli. “Deeply grateful to BMAC.”

BMAC co-founder/Co-Chair Willie “Prophet” Stiggers added, “For four decades, the world has been able to experience our story, the pain, the love, the struggle and the triumph, through the lens of great photographers like Brother Ernie Paniccioli. As we celebrate the most influential cultural force on the planet, we must also shine the light on those who've helped tell the story of this thing we call hip-hop. The BMAC x ErniePaniccioli Photojournalism Grant will ensure that we’re paying it forward and creating access for the next generation of creatives.”

Seen in the photo wondering when they can throw their hands in the air and wave 'em like they just don't care are (l-r) Paniccioli and Stiggers.
