HOT, SHUCKED AND JULIET LEAD TONY NOMS

The musical adaptation of the screwball comedy Some Like It Hot scored the most Tony Award nominations today (5/2)—13—with the Jason Owen/AEG Presents-produced Shucked and Max Martin’s & Juliet right behind it with nine apiece. Another film adaptation, New York, New York, also nabbed nine noms.

These four productions are up for the top prize of Best Musical along with Kimberly Akimbo, which received eight nods. The revival of Sweeney Todd with Josh Groban also grabbed eight nominations.

Sweeney Todd is one of two Sondheim musicals up for the Best Musical Revival trophy; Into the Woods is the other. They will be competing with the Interscope and Immersive Records co-produced Parade, which received six noms, and Camelot.

Shucked songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally were recognized in the Best Original Score category, as was Almost Famous creator Cameron Crowe.

Best Play contenders include Ain’t No Mo and Fat Ham. Suzan Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog and August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson are among the Best Revival of a Play contenders.
