KIMBERLY AKIMBO AND LEOPOLDSTADT ARE TOPS AT TONYS

Kimberly Akimbo, a story about a teenage girl with a condition that causes her to age rapidly, by composer Jeanine Tesori and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire, was the top winner at the 2023 Tony Awards. Among the show's five wins were trophies for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actress (Victoria Clark) and Best Featured Actress (Bonnie Milligan).

Leopoldstadt won four awards, including Best Play, while revivals of Parade and Sweeney Todd–The Demon Barber of Fleet Street each took home two, with Parade nabbing Best Revival of a Musical.

J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like It Hot) and Alex Newell (Shucked), meanwhile, won for Lead Actor in a Musical and Featured Actor in a Musical, respectively, marking the first time openly nonbinary performers won in these categories.

Hosted by Tony nominee and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose for a second straight year, the awards almost didn't happen due to the writer's strike, but the WGA agreed not to picket the unscripted ceremony.
