KATE BUSH RUNS PAST 1B SPOTIFY STREAMS

Kate Bush saw an explosion in streams following the 2022 season of Netflix's Stranger Things, which put her single "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" to excellent use. The song has now crossed 1 billion streams on Spotify, something the British chanteuse never saw coming.

"A billion streams!" Bush wrote on her website. "I have an image of a river that suddenly floods and becomes many, many tributaries—a billion streams—on their way to the sea. Each one of these streams is one of you. Thank you! Thank you so much for sending this song on such an impossibly astonishing journey. I’m blown away.”

"Running Up That Hill" was released in 1985 on Hounds of Love (EMI), the singer-songwriter's fifth studio album. It peaked at #3 in the U.K. and #30 stateside. But after the Stranger Things bump, the decades-old song soared to #3 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K., Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Belgium and Australia.

It was also determined to be the most-streamed throwback of the year on Spotify’s 2022 Wrapped tally, having seen a roughly 8,700% increase in global streams. Perhaps as importantly, it introduced a new generation to Bush's influential catalog.

Bush will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year with Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners and DJ Kool Herc, among others. Revisit "Running Up That Hill" below.
