Once upon a time there was an app called Twitter, and lo, it became America's digital town square. All and sundry did convene there to post their thoughts and hector one another with contrasting opinions. Cultural commentators scoured it for the comments of muckety-mucks, however brain-meltingly mundane. The news programs on the TV box and the remaining newspapers spent all day slavishly republishing the churlish, vainglorious yawps of celebrities.
And then a very wealthy man whom some considered a genius spent a lot of money on it, took a baseball bat to everything that made it functional, fired key staff and turned the place into a he-man woman-haters clubhouse.
While many bemoaned Twitter's grim metamorphosis into a chaotic, reactionary hellhole, most of the alternatives weren't really ready for prime time. But then—huzzah!—a new microbloggy app was debuted by Meta, the people behind Instagram and Facebook. It was called Threads. And there was much preliminary rejoicing.
Will Threads last? Will it take Twitter's place? Will Elon Musk be discovered living in a fallout shelter with a briefcase full of cash? We do not know the answers to any of these questions. But we do know that HITS has a Threads account and you can find us at hitsdd. Let's yawp again, like we did last summer!
