EMMY NOMS: THINGS WE NOTICED
Music supervisors for Prime Video's Daisy Jones & the Six, Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso and HBO's The White Lotus will be competing for this year’s Emmy Award against two recent winners, Stranger Things’ Nora Felder and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Robin Urdang.
Nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were announced Wednesday (7/12); the final season of HBO’s Succession leads the way with 27 noms. Other shows securing more than 20 nominations were HBO's The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (23) and Ted Lasso (21). The full list of noms is here.
Contending for the Music Supervision award are Frankie Pine for Daisy Jones & the Six, Christa Miller for Ted Lasso and Gabe Hilfer for The White Lotus.
Two songs from Ted Lasso are nominated in the song category (Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics): “Fought & Lost” by Tom Howe, Jamie Hartman and Sam Ryder and “A Beautiful Game” by Ed Sheeran, Foy Vance and Max Martin.
The other contenders are “Marriage Is a Dungeon” by Lili Haydn and Ben Bromfield (from Netflix's Ginny & Georgia); “All About Me” by Heather McIntosh, Taura Stinson and Allyson Newman for Showtime's The L Word: Generation Q; “Your Personal Trash Man Can” by Curtis Moore and Thomas Mizer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; and “Now You Know” by "Weird Al" Yankovic for Roku's Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna landed five noms, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live), where it will compete against Netflix’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, Disney+’s Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium and The Oscars and the Tony Awards. It is also up for Outstanding Music Direction, where its competition includes Library Of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song: Joni Mitchell from Ken Ehrlich Productions and the 2022 Rock of Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
Among music-themed shows, Daisy Jones & the Six received nine nominations, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story pulled in eight, the David Bowie doc Moonage Daydream grabbed five, Showtime's George & Tammy earned four and Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas received two.
Our friends at Gunpowder & Sky, meanwhile, are celebrating their Emerging Media Program category nom for The Notorious B.I.G. Sky’s the Limit: A VR Concert Experience, which Van Toffler and team co-produced with The Notorious B.I.G. Estate and exec producers Alex Coletti and Elliot Osagie.
Voters will have some tough decisions to make, as several celebrated series have aired their final episodes, chiefly Succession, Better Call Saul, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry and Ted Lasso.
Succession, which has won the Drama Series trophy twice, is up against two shows hoping for their first win in the category, Better Call Saul, which is up for the top Emmy for a seventh time, and The Crown, a five-time nominee. The competition is newcomers Andor from Disney+ and the HBO Max shows House of the Dragon and The Last of Us plus Showtime’s Yellowjackets, which was nominated last year. The White Lotus, which won in the Limited Series category last year, is a first-time nominee here.
Maisel and Ted Lasso, which won the Comedy Series prize in 2018 and 2021, respectively, are up against newcomers FX/Hulu’s The Bear, the first season of which received 13 noms, Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty and Netflix’s Wednesday. Barry, Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building have been previously nominated in the category.
One interesting category is Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, which finds four actors from Succession up against four actors from The White Lotus. Another battle is brewing for the Roy family: All three lead actors in Succession received noms.
Shows eligible for this year’s Emmys had to premiere between June 2022 and May of this year. The Emmy calendar has the ceremony scheduled for 9/18, but if the writers are still on strike, it’s highly likely it will be postponed. In which case you can binge Columbo for the third time since the pandemic started.
