UPDATE: The final numbers are in. Sony’s Gran Turismo topped its estimate, while Warner Bros.’ Barbie was $2m shy of its original figure.
Gran Turismo raked in $17.4m. Barbie came in second on a tally of $15.1m.
Sony’s Gran Turismo and Warner Bros.’ Barbie are neck and neck at the weekend box office, with prognosticators picking Gran Turismo as the winner once all the ticket stubs are counted.
The race-car movie gets to that figure by counting $5.3m from preview screenings and fan events over recent weeks. A final number for all films is a bit of an unknown, though, as Sunday was National Cinema Day, on which ticket prices were dropped to $4 at 3,000 theaters.
What is known is that Barbie has surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2023; its total take is $594.8m. Meanwhile, Universal’s Oppenheimer will hit $300m this week as moves into fifth place on the highest-grossing stateside films of 2023 chart.
