UMG, BMG STRIKE PARTNERSHIP

“I can’t wait to hear how that new Jason Aldean album sounds on my Dual turntable from the ’70s,” Lucian Grainge, right,
tells BMG CEO Thomas Coesfeld. "Wait till you listen to the new Stones LP on your TransRotor."

Universal Music Group and BMG have formed an alliance that will kick off next year with UMG handling distribution of BMG’s physical product.

The companies will further explore a range of collaborative initiatives to expand opportunities for BMG-signed artists around the world.

UMG’s Commercial Services division will be distributing vinyl and CD for thousands of BMG-signed artists in more than 200 markets beginning in the second quarter of 2024. BMG and UMG are already discussing joining forces in adjacent business lines.

“BMG has brought a fresh vision to the music business, and we look forward to partnering with BMG on a variety of initiatives to provide greater opportunities to artists and our respective companies,” UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said.

BMG reported that its recorded music business has tripled its revenues over the past seven years, and is currently enjoying its most successful period yet with strong performances from artists including Jelly Roll, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora and Lainey Wilson.

BMG CEO Thomas Coesfeld said, “Our alliance with UMG is a significant step to further enhance our service to BMG-signed artists. We are delighted to partner with UMG, the world leader in music-based entertainment on our thriving physical recorded music business. Their scale, technology and commitment promises to further expand opportunities for BMG-signed artists around the world.”
