KALI UCHIS GETS HER FLOWERS

Geffen’s Kali Uchis is making noise worldwide. The versatile artist, who has seen success in multiple genres and two languages, has followed up her recent #2 chart bow ORQUÍDEAS with an international rocket of a single, “Igual Que un Ángel” f/Peso Pluma, which has hit #3 at Apple Music and sits in Spotify’s global Top 10 as of this writing.

ORQUÍDEAS is Kali's second full-length release in less than a year; 2023’s R&B-leaning Red Moon in Venus scored a Top 5 debut—not to mention #1 Album of the Year kudos from Time magazine and generally rapturous reviews across the board—when it arrived last March. But with her latest set, she returns to all Spanish-language material, harking back to her breakthrough, 2022’s Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios), which boasted the global smash “Telepatía.” That cut, which made major waves on TikTok, has logged north of 1 billion worldwide streams on Spotify and lit up assorted charts; indeed, it stands as the longest-running Spanish-language song by a solo act this decade (23 weeks). Sin Miedo was nominated for a Best Música Urbana Album Grammy.

Kali’s impressive global success has undoubtedly been bolstered by the alignment of IGA’s L.A. and Miami offices as John Janick’s mothership, Tom March-led Geffen and its Nir Seroussi-overseen Latin division refine their synergy. She’s managed by Shakira Kalite and Jon Lieberberg. Seroussi shared A&R duties on ORQUÍDEAS with Interscope SVP A&R Matt Morris, who has been working with Kali for some time.

The U.S.-born artist, originally Karly Marina Loaiza, was reportedly given her musical moniker (which she’s called a family “pet name”) by her Colombian dad. Her fans, you’ll be interested to know, are known as “Kuchis.” If you’re wondering what HITS fans are called, we’ll let you know as soon as somebody admits to being one.
