Paramount’s musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love brought in an estimated $27.7m over the weekend at the nation’s cinemas and is expected to hit an impressive $51m between its opening on Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. It has also rejuvenated interest in the music of Bob Marley & The Wailers.
It will easily land in the Top 5 of openings for music biopics—2015’s Straight Outta Compton is #1 with $60m—and globally hit an $80m total, adding $29m from 47 territories.
It has already pushed titles from the reggae legend’s Island/UMe catalog (different editions of Legend and Exodus) and the new soundtrack into the Top 30 at iTunes; Legend sat in the Top 5 throughout the three-day weekend. “Three Little Words” is in the iTunes Top 40 with “One Love”/”People Get Ready” working its way up the chart as well.
Throughout the weekend, Marley & The Wailers was the top heritage act on the Spotify Top Artists charts for the U.S. and Global.
Sony’s superhero thriller Madame Web opened in second place with $17.6m over the weekend. It made $25.8m during the same six-day holiday-to-holiday period.
