AMERICAN WEDDING RINGS BOX-OFFICE BELLS

It May Not Be as Big as Signs, But At Least It Ain’t Gigli
A true sequel’s sequel, American Wedding brought in some $34.3 million over the weekend, handing it a #1 debut. The third in the American Pie series brought in $11 million less than 2001’s AP2, but $13 million more than this week's #2, Spy Kids 2, so go defile a Dutch apple or something, okay?

Last year at this time, the leading movie was Mel Gibson’s Signs, which pulled in over $60 million. See? Things are tough all over.

Speaking of which, it’s not a good week for Ben & Jen, whose hard-to-pronounce dud Gigli opened with a dismal $3.8 million, tying Finding Nemo (the year’s highest-grossing movie at $320 million) for #7.

The rest of the Top 10 is as follows: #3 Pirates of the Caribbean ($19.1m), #4 Seabiscuit ($17.5m), #5 Bad Boys II ($12.7m), #6 Lara Croft: Tomb raider—The Cradle of Life ($11.3m), #9 The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ($3.2m) and #10 Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ($2.9m).
