HOPE FROM THE ASHES: MUSIC RISING LAHAINA

In the wake of the devastating fires that leveled the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in August, Music Rising—the nonprofit established in 2005 by U2's The Edge and producer Bob Ezrin—has unveiled Music Rising Lahaina (MRL) to aid musicians and other artists affected by the disaster.

Many of these creators lost everything to the flames: their homes, their instruments and their livelihoods, not to mention the local venues that hosted their performances and work. Music Rising will provide resources to MRL to replace instruments and furnish financial support.

Applications for various kinds of assistance are now available. Approved applicants will be notified via email, text or phone.

Music Rising is also donating proceeds from its merch to the MRL effort through November. Click the store tab at the MRL site to shop.

MRL is administered by the Positively Kai Foundation. The Musician's Advisory Group includes Keola Beamer, Jake Shimabukuro, Jeff Peterson and Joshua Kahula. Partners include Mana Mentors, Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, The Guitar Center Music Foundation and MusiCares.

Music Rising's 2005 launch was a response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and motivated by a mission to rescue the musical culture of the affected regions. Instruments and other resources were provided to thousands of musicians, students and organizations. The org has received numerous laurels, including a PRISM Award, the Jazz Foundation of American Medal of Honor and a Gold Halo Award for Cause Marketing.
