STEREOPHONIC, HELL'S KITCHEN WIN BIG AT TONYS

The Fleetwood Mac-evoking Stereophonic, written by former Arcade Fire member Will Butler, walked away with five wins at the Tony Awards last night (6/17).

The musical scored trophies for Best Play, Featured Actor in a Play (for Will Brill), Direction of a Play (Daniel Aukin), Sound Design and Scenic Design of a Play (David Zinn).

Book of a Musical and Original Score, however, went to the suffragette history Suffs, written by Shaina Taub.

Among the many standout performances, JAY-Z blew the crowd away when he joined Alicia Keys for a spirited rendition of "Empire State of Mind" in celebration of her musical, Hell's Kitchen, which won the Tony for Leading Actress in a Musical (Maleah Joi Moon). Keys herself earned a statuette for her role as a producer of Best New Musical The Outsiders. Pete Townshend played the opening chords of "Pinball Wizard" as he joined the cast for a rousing rendition of the cornerstone of The Who's Tommy.

As the three-hour ceremony came to a close, a tearful Kecia Lewis collected her award for Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Hell's Kitchen, Jonathan Groff, an early favorite, took home Best Actor in a Musical for Merrily We Roll Along and The Outsiders scooped up Best Musical.

Ariana DeBose hosted for the third consecutive year. Presenters included HITS Pride cover subject Ben Platt, Nick Jonas, Jennifer Hudson and Taraji P. Henson, among many others.

The 77th Annual Tony Awards aired live on CBS from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center with Jack Sussman again serving as executive producer.
