ELTON SCORES CHART RECORD
10/14/21

Elton John, whose collab with Dua Lipa, “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” (EMI), looks set to dethrone Ed Sheeran from #1 Friday, has become the only act in Official U.K. Chart history to score a Top 10 single in six different decades.

John made his first appearance on the U.K. chart with “Your Song” in 1971, which hit #7 and paved the way for nine more Top 10 hits that decade. “Blue Eyes” was his first Top 10 hit in the ’80s and was followed by six more. John started the ’90s by hitting #1 with “Sacrifice” b/w “Healing Hands” and that decade became his second most prolific with a further seven Top 10 hits. In the ’00s, he scored six in total.

The ‘10s brought #8 hit “Step Into Christmas”; this year’s “Cold Heart” is taken from his upcoming The Lockdown Sessions collaborations set, which lands on 10/22. Should the latter hold onto its midweek peak, it will bring John’s run of #1 singles to eight.

With his latest feat, the British star leapfrogs ahead of five other music legends—Elvis, Cher, Cliff Richard, Michael Jackson and David Bowie—who have each landed at least one Top 10 single in five different decades. His most successful chart-topper is 1997’s “Candle In The Wind 97” b/w ”Something About The Way You Look Tonight,” which is the U.K.’s best-selling single of all time with 4.94m pure sales.
